Plans and Elevations

3D shapes can be made up of a series of 2D shapes in order to represent them on a 2D sheet.

When designing a building, architects have to make 2D drawings of a 3D shape. In this lesson you will learn how to draw plans and elevations from a 3D shape and vice versa.

A plan of a 3D shape is what it would look like when viewed directly from above. It is sometimes called a 'bird's eye view'.

An elevation is the view from a given side. You see buildings in their side elevations when you are on the ground.

We can also work out what a 3D shape looks like, given the plan and elevations.
