Water is used to generate electricity from different forms due to its movement. We will explore the advantages and disadvantages of using water.

We can generate energy from the movement of water. Which of the following options are examples of this? Pick all the options you think are correct.

Hydro-electric power involves water from a reservoir. How do you think electricity is generated?

A) Water is released bit by bit from the reservoir, through two turbines connected to generators which generates electricity. B) Water is stored in the dam and all released at once to turn a generator that generates electricity. C) The water in a reservoir is heated, and the steam turns the turbine connected to the generator which generates electricity.

Answer A, B or C

Have a good look at the image.

Hydroelectricity is the process of using water in a reservoir to turn a turbine connected to a generator which generates electricity.

2

The advantages of hydroelectricity include...

low costs once it is set up, the reliability and the fact there is no pollution and the fact that it is a renewable resource, as the water can be used again and again. Also, when it rains (and it does this a lot in the U.K) this adds water to the reservoir.

3

The disadvantages of hydroelectricity include...

the fact that the amount of energy generated is relatively small and that there is also a lot of environmental damage to create a reservoir as you flood large areas (including villages in some instances). There is also a large start up cost to create the reservoir.

We can place generators connected to turbines on the sea bed floor.

When the waves come in and go out they force air up the column to turn the turbine which generates electricity. The advantages are there is no pollution and small running costs. However, these are unreliable and do not generate a lot of electricity.

We can also use the tidal power of water to generate electricity.

Tidal barrages are big dams built across river estuaries with turbines in them. When the tide comes in, it fills up the estuary and is then allowed out through the turbines at a controlled speed which generates electricity.

Now that you know the method for using tidal power to generate electricity. Select the disadvantages of this method from the list below.
