Multiples

Multiples are the result of successively adding the same number together.

A MULTIPLE is the result of multiplying a number by a positive integer. The first five multiples of 1212 are:

12,24,36,48,6012,24,36,48,60

Here's another way of thinking about it

Multiples are the times tables of a number

To find the "5th multiple of 7", we would multiply:

5×75 \times 7

Which tells us the 5th multiple of 77 is 3535.

Choose the "2nd multiple of 77".

What are the first four multiples of 66?

Multiples can be shared amongst two or more numbers.

Let's find a common multiple of 88 and 1212.

1

Start by listing the multiple of 88.

8,16,24,32,40,...8, 16, 24, 32, 40, ...

2

Now list the multiples of 1212.

12,24,36,48,...12, 24, 36, 48, ...

3

What is the lowest common multiple?

4

This will not be the only common multiple.

4848 is also a common multiple.

5

But 2424 is the first common multiple.

We call this the "lowest common multiple" (LCM).
