Multiples
Multiples are the result of successively adding the same number together.
A MULTIPLE is the result of multiplying a number by a positive integer. The first five multiples of 12 are:
12,24,36,48,60
Here's another way of thinking about it
Multiples are the times tables of a number
To find the "5th multiple of 7", we would multiply:
5×7
Which tells us the 5th multiple of 7 is 35.
Choose the "2nd multiple of 7".
What are the first four multiples of 6?
Multiples can be shared amongst two or more numbers.
Let's find a common multiple of 8 and 12.
Start by listing the multiple of 8.
8,16,24,32,40,...
Now list the multiples of 12.
12,24,36,48,...
What is the lowest common multiple?
This will not be the only common multiple.
48 is also a common multiple.
But 24 is the first common multiple.
We call this the "lowest common multiple" (LCM).
