Multiples

Multiples are the result of successively adding the same number together.

A MULTIPLE is the result of multiplying a number by a positive integer. The first five multiples of $12$ are:

$12,24,36,48,60$

Here's another way of thinking about it

Multiples are the times tables of a number

To find the "5th multiple of 7", we would multiply:

$5 \times 7$

Which tells us the 5th multiple of $7$ is $35$ .

Choose the "2nd multiple of $7$ ".

What are the first four multiples of $6$ ?

Multiples can be shared amongst two or more numbers.

Let's find a common multiple of $8$ and $12$ .

Start by listing the multiple of $8$ .

$8, 16, 24, 32, 40, ...$

Now list the multiples of $12$ .

$12, 24, 36, 48, ...$

What is the lowest common multiple?

This will not be the only common multiple.

$48$ is also a common multiple.

But $24$ is the first common multiple.

We call this the "lowest common multiple" (LCM).
